Ruby Rhod is one of my favorite characters in sci-fi ever because he is Luc Besson’s vision of the hetero sex symbol of the future: a flamboyant, emotionally labile man who wears skin-tight leopard print or decks himself in roses, a man who accessorizes with big jewelry and dabbles in cosmetics. And the ladies love him. Everything about him screams “gay” according to our stereotypes, but he’s portrayed as a 100% straight sexual dynamo.
Besson is one of the few directors I’ve seen who actually recognizes that our ideas of sexuality and gender performance might have changed drastically in the future.

Right, so I have an 2000 words long essay due at midnight tonight. Clearly, the better decision is to spend time writing and then editing a 2k short SF story. It’s influenced heavily by The Forever War; I based it on some of the same concepts, but it also (vaguely) draws from Tiptree’s story “We Who Stole the Dream.”
If anyone feels inclined to respond and tell me I’ve horribly fucked up, please make it constructive so I’ll know how to improve in the future.
Length: 2157
Warnings: Colonization, PTSD, present tense prose, only been roughly edited by myself.
Hmm. something I'm curious about? HOW DOES YOUR TUMBLR THEME NOT SCORCH YOUR RETINAS? Also maybe something more serious. Ooooh! What was the first thing you read that got you into Sci-Fi?
Rude, I found it cheerfully bright and spring like! And tried to make the colours compliment and contrast :(
RE: SF — actually, it was probably growing up, being super aware of Blade Runner since it was one of my dad’s favourite movie. Hrm. I guess technically the first SF book that left an impression on me was Shade’s Children.
My brother chucked it at me for something to read, and I found the ending super poignant and left a lump in my throat (the idea of a new era beginning, and some people dying so the new world can come about, and knowing there’d be no place for them there.)
Or, uh, also Scott Westerfeld’s Uglies trilogy? I remember plowing through them in Middle school. I have no idea if I read the Nix book or Westerfeld’s first whoops. :S (also I am SO GLAD I own the books with their first edition covers. The new ones make me cringe so bad)
Still, I hadn’t read much SF before university! Which is why taking that course in second year was like “HOLY SHIT. Tiptree, u r my forever girl.”

So I was chatting with Pal, who mentioned she hasn’t read much science fiction. And so I eagerly offered to share some stories I like with her, and she agreed.
These are the best versions of the stories I could find, so sorry if they’re a little hard to read sometimes! They’re worth it, I promise.
However, I’d highly recommend The Wesleyan Anthology of Science Fiction, which is a fucking fantastic collection of SF short stories. It’s expensive, but it’s like 800 pages of quality fiction, with helpful intros to each story.
Also, Her Smoke Rose Up Forever by James Tiptree Jr is a collection of her amazing, ground-breaking stories that are fiercely feminist and beautifully vicious.
Anyway, onto the recs!
Re-bageling this at a more decent time, with a typo corrected!

I guess this is the last of all the HSO stuff, hehe. anyway, since collab round voting is over! here’s team Terezi<3Vriska’s entry, which we are delighted as heck to present to you! you can read the comic here.
sometimes you want epic stories of godhood and betrayal, and sometimes you just want a totally sweet little story about SP4C3 8A8IES IN SPACE. tumblr users viazi and priestofspace did the super cute baby Scourges! tumblr user me did backgrounds, and dialogue. we worked incredibly hard on this, and incredibly fast, and somehow managed to get it all the way from thumbnails to lettering in under a week! so we are really very happy indeed about how it came out.

Sandworm Size Chart. Suddenly a Sarlacc doesn’t seem so bad.
I love this. So much.
Oh man, I was so so scared of the Beetlejuice sandworms when I first saw the film at a young age. Fast forward to high school, where I fell in love with Dune’s.

Dang, this is cool.
I would wear this.
I’m a guy, but that is irrelevant to the awesomest of how I would look in this dress.
Woah dang.
